Scholarships help Alberta students pursue trades careers
Registered Apprenticeship Program awards 2008 scholarships
Calgary… One hundred fifty-seven students in the Calgary area and southern Alberta will each receive $1,000 scholarships to further their careers in a variety of trades. The Government of Alberta, in partnership with industry, funds the scholarships which go to Alberta high school graduates who participated in the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) and who target careers in trades.
A total of 385 students are receiving scholarships this year. RAP enables high school students to be employed as apprentices and earn on-the-job training hours while completing high school. The scholarships, established in 2001, go towards in-class training at the post-secondary level. In addition, apprentices who were RAP students prior to 2008 but did not receive a scholarship may be eligible for scholarships under the program.“Alberta is renowned for its high-quality trades and technology training and this program plays an important role,” said Advanced Education and Technology Minister Doug Horner. “RAP enables students to gain valuable experience and take that into their post-secondary careers. We’re pleased that more employers are recognizing the value of providing scholarships so that they can help shape the next generation economy.”
A ceremony honouring scholarship recipients from the Calgary area and southern Alberta will take place in Calgary on November 14.
“We are pleased to help recognize the hard work and success of Alberta’s students who see trades as a vital career path,” said Andy Neigel, President and CEO of CAREERS: The Next Generation. “Alberta’s opportunities in trades only continue to grow and these scholarships are a way of giving these students the recognition they deserve and a good start to their post-secondary training.”
“Skilled tradespeople are in high demand in Alberta,” said Brian Bickley, Chair of the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board. “The Registered Apprenticeship Program is an excellent way for students in high school to start a career in the trades. We salute those who are being recognized for their academic and trades-related accomplishments and are continuing their apprenticeship program after high school.”

The Government of Alberta’s Registered Apprenticeship Program began in 1991 with five students. In 2008, more than 1,700 students are participating in the program.
